South Hero Recreation Commission – Meeting Minutes
March 15, 2018, 7:00pm, South Hero Town Hall
Members present: Dave Hobbs, Erin Morse, Karin Ames
Community Members present: Gary Smith
1) February Meeting Minutes approved
2) Public Input: Gary Smith from ICAR (The Islands Center for Arts & Recreation) attended to share information as follows:
a) Advertise ICAR Events, which include July 3rd Fireworks and concert, Tuesday Night Concerts at Knight Point State Park
b) ICAR is seeking assistance helping organize and execute events and would be happy to have SHRC members join.
c) ICAR’s current mission: Promotion of events at Knight Point State Park to support keeping the park open and available to Islands Community.
d) Action – Ask Mike to add flyer info to SH Recreation page.
3) Treasurer’s Report – deferred until the next meeting.
4) New Business
a) Swim Program 2018: Price increase from $130 to $145. Members present agreed the increase is fine.
b) Plowing trailheads: TBD – Dave to ask John Beaulac to refrain from creating snow pile barrier at trailheads.
5) Older Business
i) White’s Beach: Plan for installation in April. Dave will ask Tom to order signs.
ii) Trailheads: Erin in contact with state regarding signs for Roy Marsh Trail.
iii) Karin will ask rangers at Sandbar and Niquette Bay to send overflow traffic to Kinght Point and not White’s Beach.
b) Advertising recreational programs, including all county: We will continue to search to find avenue that works for all to participate in common programs (electronically). Dave will reach out to towns to see if sharing via web sites/online media would work for everyone.
c) Pedestrian/Bike Crossing marking emphasis at Rte 2 and South Street: To be discussed at next meeting.
d) Trail Network Committee Report – Next meeting is April 5th – agenda includes reviewing an Outreach document and planning strategy for approaching landowners.
e) Spring work party opportunities – dates TBD
i) Upper field, recreation park
ii) Roof repair for Rec Park Ice Pond skating shelter
6) Other Business
a) Bike for the Lake Event – Ask Mike to respond to ask for potential numbers to be sure one port-o-let is enough; potentially work out arrangements for additional needs for that day.
b) Subsidized park passes – Erin offered the suggestion that the SHRC offer VT State Park passes for families that cannot afford them; to be discussed in depth at next meeting.
