Recreation Commission Meeting Minutes

September 21, 2017, 7pm, Town Office

Present: Dave Hobbs, Tom Chagnon, Karin Ames

0) Eoana Sturges’ resignation accepted; Karin to organize a dinner celebration for both Nancy and Eoana.

1) July Meeting Minutes: Reviewed and approved.

2) Public Input: None.

3) Treasurer’s Report: Deferred until October meeting.

4) New business:

A) South Hero recreation park fire pond maintance: Cattails have grown into the pond which will interfere with ice skating this winter. A work party is needed to remove. See below for date options.

B) Pedestrian and bike crossing markings: Mike and Dave pursued marking the crossing with colorful, eye catching artwork as has been done in other communities. Initial feedback from the state was not supportive. We will discuss further at the next meeting.

5) Old business

A) Additional field at SH Recreation park by school: Mike, Dave, and Andy met and agreed to mow an area for a small additional athletic field next to the exercise equipment area. Decision needs to be confirmed with the Selectboard – Dave will do.

B) Boardwalk at SH Recreation Park: Repairs needed. Work party to be arranged to include this, as well as cattail removal and possibly removal of buoys at White’s Beach. Dates:

10/14, 10/15, 10/21 or 10/22

C) White’s Beach: Buoys need to be removed. Tom will look for large spool (wire or cable type) to help with storage and reinstallation next year. Once spools are found, Tom will organize a work party (may or may not be the same day as the one above).

D) Trails Project: Dave will ask Sherry Winnie at the VT Forest, Parks and Recreation Dept. for 2018 grant info. Karin will write grant if applicable.

E) White’s Beach Parking: Issues of nonresident use persists. Signs will be installed in Spring 2018, monitored for one month, report discussed with the Selectboard for further action.

F) Volleyball sand update: Dave asked about cost and quality and was assured both were optimized at the time.

G) Fall soccer: going well – very well attended.

H) County-wide Recreation calendar: Options to be discussed at the next meeting.
