February Meeting Minutes

February Meeting Minutes

Minutes, Recreation Commission monthly meeting, February 16, 2017
Members Present: Karin Ames, Mike Wickenden, Dave Hobbs
1) December 2016 meeting minutes approved
2) Emily Alger, Executive Director of South Hero Land Trust discussed:
     A) Canceling the idea for possible town purchase of Town Line Rd sliding hill, because the land has since been sold.
     B) Initiative to preserve property on Tracy Rd with lovely woods and proposed public walking trails. Commissioners are enthusiastic about adding these trails to the list of beautiful 1-3 mile walking trails in our town and we will certainly support this land conservation. Our dream is to be able to connect similar areas (e.g. Roy Marsh Trail, Landon Farm Trail, etc.) into a network, possibly through adding trail rights-of-way along the present extensive power line rights-of-way. We are hoping for some expertise in acquiring rights-of-way from staff at the “Safe Routes to School” program and will forward these minutes to Amy Brewer and to Terry Seekamp at Folsom School.
3)Treasurer Report
With the revenue from the Soccer Program and expenditures for that and the Ski Program included, we have roughly $3K for expenditures for volleyball sand and nets and for trails this fiscal year.
4)  A) Current conditions for skating pond are uncertain since recent snowfall and recent drawing out of water by the fire department.
     B) We will get out a +/- quarterly Islandwide Recreational Calendar, starting this Spring (for this summer’s activities). North Hero has copied us their brochure.
5)  A) Youth basketball for K-2 was successful with good participation. Many Thanks to Dylan Degree.( How many participants, Dylan ? )
     B) 2016-17 Ski Program has been great, partly thanks to great snow conditions. Transportation by parents has been working although Commission wonders about possible bus — to be debated prior to 2017-18 season. Folsom school program for older kids presently uses a bus for 3 all day sessions (as opposed to 4 half day sessions for the younger children’s program we are helping to support).
     C) Swim lesson dates for 2017 will be confirmed as well as location.
     D) Roy Marsh Trail use and maintenance agreement with the State for 2012 was never signed… a new license application was resubmitted this month. This  would essentially be a renewal of previous (2006-2011) agreement and includes a statement licensing maintenance of the gravel base. With the new agreement we will apply for a trail grant to restore the base conditions.
