About the Recreation Commission
HISTORY OF THE COMMISSION
The South Hero Recreation Commission was formed approximately 30 years
ago as an extension of the town Selectboard to enhance healthy
recreational activities for community members and visitors. Members are
volunteers appointed by the Selectboard and are responsible to the
Selectboard.
Over the years, many activities have been sponsored including soccer for
youth and adults, basketball, volleyball, tryathalon, swimming lessons,
running races, ice skating, and cycling. Some programs have involved
combining efforts with other island towns and with the schools.
Significant effort has also been directed at providing locations for
healthy recreational activities.
One of the leaders in this regard was Donald Peach, a former and
well-loved resident. Through his and many others’ hard work, the town
has secured property which will eventually become the parks & trails of South
Hero. We envision a healthier and happier community as a result of these
facilities and programs.
